As you may have heard, the Sci-Fi Channel is “evolving” into the SyFy Channel, which allegedly sounds more modern and futuristic according to this article while also allowing for ownership of the name as a brand (regardless of any similiar company name already in existence). The updated version of the channel will feature virtually anything imaginative, which is pretty much what Sci-Fi had been doing for as long as I can remember anyhow, though often not even very well. I find the new cyber name a bit lame and I guess I’ve had the same sentiments for the channel as well with few exceptions. Sci-Fi tends to have a lot of original movies that sound completely up my alley, but the scripts tend to fall flat and I usually end up changing the channel, no matter how many dragons are promised. I think that the quality of programming is what needs an upgrade, not the spelling of the channel’s name… and even under the umbrella of anything imaginative, wrestling should NOT be a part of the Sci-Fi or SyFy lineup
As many have pointed out, the channel is much like MTV, abandoning its original cause for mindless junk. Maybe that’s worked for the masses of teenagers who watch MTV, but for geeks who want intellectual stimulation, reality TV is rather unwelcome, even if it involves hero-wannabes. I feel like Sci-Fi is trying to be the cool kid at school, even if it means forsaking interesting and exciting ideas that might not be embraced by everyone.
Why not make better “original content” to gain a wider audience instead of a name change?
“The new Syfy channel – Same Crap, New Name”
I would think abandoning the practice of putting their name on every “Large animal or fairy tale kills people with low budget fx” movie would help build the appeal more.
